The essential oil of thyme thymol is one of the most powerful of all essential oils. Its main component, thymol, is one of the ‘top four’ purifying substances, along with carvacrol, eugenol and cinnamaldehyde. Providing it is kept in a properly sealed dark bottle, it can maintain its strength for more than 15 years. It is also effective in very small concentrations. Cough syrups are occasionally enriched with this type of thyme oil. Except in case of an oncoming sore throat, for which careful oral use in its pure form is highly effective, it will always be used in a diluted state. It combines well with all other ‘airway’ oils; for example, to create a mixture to purify the air by diffusion. Thyme thymol further supports the body’s natural resistance and digestion. In low doses it has a pleasantly soft fragrance, whereas in its undiluted state it might be perceived as being too strong and irritating.
